Catering and Food Hygiene Training Opportunities Enjoy cooking and want a new challenge? Working in the catering industry could be for you – chef, sous chef, kitchen assistant, we can make it happen by helping you with the right qualifications! If you are aged between 20 and 65 and live in Worcestershire, you may be eligible for free training funded by the European Social Fund through Herefordshire and Worcestershire Learning and Skills Council. The Oldington and Foley Park Community Network run courses which qualify you to work in the food industry. Students can take courses in basic food hygiene or NVQ Level 1 or 2 Catering in small groups of four, which means you move at the speed which suits you and ensures that all students have access to the tutor support they may need. Flexible learning is also an option on some courses, so that you can study when it is convenient and at your own pace. Course Tutor: courses are run by Julie Hanbury who has 22 years’ experience as a chef in restaurants, hotels, pubs and schools as well as considerable experience as a community tutor. Crèche facilities are available for most courses, so that if you have pre-school children you can still learn, confident that your children are being well looked after in our OFSTED registered crèche. Level 2 Award In Food Safety This qualification is essential for anyone working in the catering industry and has to be renewed every two years. Job applicants who already have this qualification will have an advantage in the job market. The course involves 6 hours of learning which usually takes place during one day and includes a multiple choice exam at the end. You will learn about food safety, safe storage of food, avoiding food poisoning, how to reheat meals, cleanliness in the kitchen and avoidance of vermin, awareness of bacteria and the damage it can cause. NVQ Level 1 and 2 Catering These are recognised qualifications for the catering industry and together with the Level 2 award in food safety would equip candidates for a variety of positions in catering.
The qualification usually takes 12 months to complete and study can be flexible so that you can progress at your own speed. Most of the learning is practical and kitchen based, but some written work and self study is involved. Students will learn about basic knife skills, stocks and soups, sauces; meal preparation to catering industry standards and in Level 2 will progress onto boning fish, carving a joint and portioning a chicken. OCN Units in Cookery or Catering As an alternative, nationally recognised OCN units in cookery and catering (typically 10 - 30 hours of learning) can provide the first step into a career in catering.
