Learner Success Stories for WAP Project
As part of his Community Service, Stuart Sargent worked in the warehouse at Oldington and Foley Park Community Network’s Furniture Centre and was interested to find out about the learning opportunities available through the WAP project. Stuart completed an Initial Assessment in January 2006 stating that he wanted to gain relevant qualifications and experience to improve his job prospects. He enrolled on both the 30 hour Electrical Appliance Basic Repair course (OCN Level 1) and Warehousing (OCN Level 1) in January 2006. He successfully completed both courses in May 2006 and the portfolios were moderated by OCN in July. Stuart was also able to benefit from one-off funding offered by the LSC for an additional course and successfully achieved his New Driver Forklift Truck Licence in February. This meant that Stuart had a package of qualifications which equipped him to undertake warehouse work. In August The Network (Worcestershire) advertised for four Depot Operatives, Stuart applied for a position and was successful. He now works full-time in the warehouse and continues to add to his skills having started the Electrical Skills OCN Level 2 qualification which began in July (funded through NLDC). Roger attended a special needs school because he had learning difficulties. He held a variety of jobs including packing in a warehouse but when he approached OFPCN he had been unemployed for 12 months. Roger had an interest in practical learning and liked to take electrical items apart and mend them but wanted help to ensure he did this safely. Roger completed the ten week OCN Level 1 in Electrical Skills in May and worked as a volunteer in the warehouse to practise the skills he had learnt. Roger was keen to progress and add to his knowledge and started the Electrical Skills Level 2 in July 2006 and is still working towards this qualification. In August The Network (Worcestershire) advertised for four Depot Operatives and Roger was successful in his application. He has been working full time in the warehouse since then and is really enjoying his work. Karl had been unemployed for 18 months when he approached OFPCN as a result he had lost confidence and his self esteem was low. He had stopped applying for work because he felt he wouldn’t be successful in getting work. Karl enrolled on a Level 2 in Computing in February 2006. He then enrolled on the OCN Level 1 Electrical Skills Course and successfully completed this in May 2006. At the same time he also completed a Level 1 OCN in Warehousing, combined with a forklift truck new driver’s licence which equipped him to work in a warehouse environment. While completing these courses Karl started to apply for jobs and was successful in getting interviews. He has now started on an adult literacy course at OFPCN which he is thoroughly enjoying and is due to take his Level 2 certificate in the next few weeks. Karl has since been successful in his search for work and has started a job as a Depot Operative Night Worker with B&Q. |
